Sin – From “Grace and Peace” Sermon (9.9.12)

I had several people ask me to post the “sin list” that I shared this past Sunday during my sermon from Ephesians 1:2 – “Grace and Peace.” Here is a snapshot that shows the implication of our sin from the book of Genesis.

1. Sin results in hiding- keeping your faults and failures from the One who matters most. (Gen. 3:8)

2. Sin leads to throwing those you love under the bus (with destructive words of blame, pointing fingers, dodging responsibility) (Gen. 3:12)

3. Sin fosters passivity and causes people to back down when they should be standing up (Gen. 3)

4. Sin drives destructive wedges between husbands and wives- bringing division where God has intended oneness. (Gen. 3:15)

5. Sin brings about pain- both physical pain and emotional pain. Sin hurts (Gen. 3:16)

6. Sin causes innocent things to die when they don’t have to. (Gen. 3:21)

7. Sin causes work to be harder than it needs to be- filled with challenges of thorns and thistles (Gen. 3:18)

8. Sin leads to rifts between siblings that are marked by endless comparison, vicious jealousy, and anger (Gen. 4:6)

9. Sin results in displacement from God’s protection and provision (Gen. 3:24)

10. Sin leads brothers to tear their households apart in strife (Gen. 4:8).

11. Sin leads to murder – people killing other people to secure their selfish ways (Gen. 4:8).

12. Sin leads to the crushing weight of guilt and shame (Gen. 4:13).

13. Sin causes people to run away and abandon relationship for the sake of self-protection (Gen. 4:14).

14. Sin brings about insecurity, paranoia, and unexplainable fear (Gen. 4:14)

15. Sin leads to the perversion and destruction of the basic family roadmap- one husband and one wife (Gen. 4:19).

16. Sin expresses itself with greater and deeper sexual perversion that dehumanizes the image of God (Gen. 6).

17. Sin leads to separation and distance between family and friends.

18. Sin stirs up depression and despair.

19. Sin causes sorrow and grieves the heart of God (Gen. 6:6)

20. Sin results in the destruction of plants, animals, and the rest of the created order (Gen. 7).

21. Sin leads to drinking too much, living in drunkenness, and making foolish choices. (Gen. 9:21)

22. Sin results in confusion, disharmony and futility (Gen. 11:7)

23. Sin stirs up a web of lies that entangles not only the liar but all those involved (Gen. 12:19).

24. Sin leads to regret for things done that can’t ever be undone (Gen. 16).

25. Sin prods us to find our value and worth in our performance (Gen. 16)

26. Sin prods us to find our value and worth in our outward beauty and despair when we find that we don’t measure up.

27. Sin prods us to find our value and worth in our motherhood and our parenting … and despair when our children fail us (Gen. 16)

REALITY BBQ – Thursday, July 5th at 6 PM

Every year around this time, we dust off the grills and invite everyone to a church-wide BBQ down at Heritage Park (at Capital Lake). This Thursday, July 5th, you, your family and your friends are invited to enjoy some great food and fun together in the sun. We are providing all the burgers, hot dogs (with the fixings) for free. All we ask of you is to bring a side dish, drinks, or dessert based on your last name. Check the list below and bring some yummy food to share.

Last Names beginning with Letter:
A-F Salads (green, pasta, potato, etc.)
G-L Side dishes (baked beans, casseroles, etc.)
M-R Desserts (cookies, bars, etc.)

This is a great way for our many services to come together, meet new people, and reconnect with old friends. The food will be ready to go at 6 PM, so bring a blanket, a chair, or even a frisbee.

A Response to Westboro

The following quote is a joint statement from several Thurston County pastors in response to the upcoming arrival of Westboro “Baptist Church” to our area this week. I’m saddened that we as pastors even have to make declarations like this, but I am thrilled with the unity that has developed among our local church community that allows us to speak with a common voice.

June 4, 2012

We the undersigned pastors from Thurston County are saddened to learn of the intentions of a group from Westboro “Baptist Church” to visit Olympia this month. People from Westboro, representing themselves as Christians, have carried out a misguided mission all across the nation picketing public venues and disrupting the funerals of servicemen with messages such as “God hates fags,” “thank God for IEDs,” and other equally deplorable statements. We the undersigned regret that Westboro has selected Olympia as its next target. Wherever the Westboro group goes, confusion and hurt seem to follow. Our desire as followers of Jesus Christ is to bring clarity and healing.

The fact is that the people of Westboro are wrong in their characterization of God. They do not reflect the heart and mind of Christ as revealed in the Bible; nor are they an accurate reflection of how the Bible describes a follower of Christ. While the Westboro group claims to have a Biblical basis for their rhetoric, their message is clearly adverse to many passages from the Bible like the following:

John 3:16–17: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

1 Tim. 2:3–6: “God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men…”

2 Peter 3:9: “He [God] is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

The message of the Westboro church is a distorted view of the Scripture. Jesus instructs His followers to “love our neighbors” and even to “love our enemies”. He goes so far as to say that it would be our love that would demonstrate that we are His disciples. (John 13:34-35) Thus, we reaffirm the clear calling given us by God to be a part of His loving and redemptive plan for the world. Jesus did not come to condemn the world (John 3:17), nor did He send His followers to condemn the world. We call on all Christians to follow the example of Jesus who demonstrated both grace and truth in everything He did, and to respond to the commissioning of God to love and serve all the people of our community.

We recognize that the church has not always used her voice in the appropriate way in times like these. It is partly because of this that we choose not to be silent in this instance. To all who may be hurt as the result of the unbiblical words and actions of these few from Westboro; we extend a hand of mercy to you. We are sorry if you have been subjected to this hurtful rhetoric. They do not speak for us. We want you to know that God loves you so much that He came to die for you. We are here if you want to learn more about this God — the true God of the Bible.

Peacefully,

Signed… (Updated list of names can be found on the Living Water website)

Good Friday at REALITY – Service of Darkness

As we move into April, millions of Christians around the globe are preparing their hearts to celebrate Easter. It’s a natural time in the Christian calendar for a season of reflection and celebration of the empty tomb. Now, depending on your church tradition, such Holy Week celebration can take on a wide variety of forms.  But for me, the joy of Easter morning finds its deepest meaning when I fully comprehend the weight of Jesus’ suffering on the previous days.  Resurrection Sunday seems brighter after the darkness of Good Friday.

For the past 3 years at REALITY, I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to share with our church family one of my fondest childhood memories- a Service of Darkness. For those who have never had the chance to experience a Good Friday service, let me explain. In its essence, this hour long service is a chance to tell the story- the story about Jesus.  Using candles, I will retell the events of Jesus’ birth, life, and earthly ministry leading up to his final moments on the cross. As people come to join Jesus and His ministry, more and more candles will be lit.  And then, as people turn and walk away, all the candles will be extinguished. Concluding with His final words on the cross, the service will end, the “Jesus” candle will be put out, and the service will end in darkness and silence.

Come join us at either 6:00 PM or 7:30 PM to remember the life and death of our Savior. Childcare will be provided downstairs for ages birth-5 years old. Trust me, it’s a story that will forever change your celebration of Easter.
